Winter Garden Weddings
The Winter Gardens is a stunning Victorian glasshouse that makes for a fabulous, quirky and unique DIY wedding venue or reception.
The Hydro Hall is a large wood-panelled room with a stage that can also be used for any part of your wedding day or evening.
The Winter Gardens has a capacity of up to 150 and can be used in conjunction with the Hydro Hall, which has a stage and can seat up to 80.
Both rooms are licensed for Marriage.
History of the Winter Gardens
Westfield House (The Hydro) was built as a private residence in 1860 before becoming a Hydropathic Hotel in 1879. The Winter Gardens was added in 1907. The buildings were used for various purposes before they were taken over by Queen Elizabeth High School.
Once playing host to Hollywood greats Douglas Fairbanks Junior and Charles Laughton and leading Politicians of the day, including British Prime Minister Ramsey Macdonald, the Hydro is now a Grade II Listed Building.
A Wedding in the Winter Gardens lets you:
- create a unique and bespoke wedding that reflects your personality. You have the freedom to choose your own decorations, flowers, food and drinks
- have a single location for the day with your ceremony and reception in the same spectacular venue
- flex your budget how you want, making this an affordable option
- create a fun and varied experience for you and your guests by using all of the spaces available from the old world and light-filled charm of the Winter Gardens for your ceremony or celebration dinner, to using the wood-panelled hall for the evening entertainment to the outside spaces where guests can stretch their legs and relax in the open air
- enjoy the varied outdoor space, which includes a large quad at the centre of the school filled with flower beds, seated areas and picnic benches, and mature trees and green spaces all around the school grounds.
- bring your own furniture to create the theme or look you have in mind
- bring your own drinks (no corkage charge), or arrange for a paid bar
- bring your pet, park onsite, and throw confetti
- be completely relaxed on your big day thanks to our friendly and helpful staff, who will assist you with your planning and coordination
- be in the centre of Hexham voted as the happiest town in England on multiple occasions. Explore the town’s historic roots, from the beautiful abbey to the old gaol, and visit the many boutique shops, pubs and cafes.
Wedding Package
Our Wedding Package includes use of the Winter Gardens & Hydro Hall
With up to 15 hours for your wedding day between the hours of 8.30am and 11.30pm.
We also provide 4 hours of time to set up and 2 hours of clean up time between
9.00 – 11.45pm or 12 noon – 3.00pm
You may choose to supply your own alcohol (we do not charge corkage), or you can apply for a ‘temporary events notice’ to have a pay bar.
The wedding package costs £2,500

Viewings of our gorgeous Winter Gardens and Hydro Hall can be arranged around school life, Monday – Thursday from 3:30pm. Weekend viewing may be possible by arrangement.
