Key Stage 4 Latin gives students a chance to delve into the ancient world, picking up a language with a difference and learning about the culture of the Romans across their empire (from Pompeii to Roman Britain and Egypt). The subject is perfect for curious minds, promoting intellectual rigour and independence, broadening vocabulary and grammatical awareness – Latin is acknowledged as fortifying students’ performance in English and other academic structures.
At A-level, students have the option to study Classics as a subject (classical civilization and ancient history). The subject is open to all Year 12 students (i.e. they need not have studied Latin first). Classics allows students to look into the fascinating worlds of ancient Greece and Rome, accessing a world of myth and legend, of intriguing religious practices, fantastical literature and dramatic history.
