We are looking for a volunteer STEM lead to help develop a project at QEHS which we hope will be funded by the Royal Society. The funding comes from an offshoot of their “Partnership Grants” programme under the heading “Tomorrow’s Climate Scientists”. The STEM lead will take an active role in helping the students form a research question on an aspect of biodiversity, and help to deliver or direct the research activities. QEHS is working with Northumberland National Park who will facilitate access to the Hadrian’s Wall Wetlands Landscape Recovery project area to develop this idea.
Although we can have multiple STEM advisors, the STEM lead has a specific role which is integral to the grant application including signing off the project proposal, assuring the Royal Society that the scientific method is embedded.
STEM advisors must currently be in a STEM-related role in academia (above graduate level – a PhD student would be perfect) or industry (with appropriate STEM industrial experience). Their main role cannot be in outreach or engagement. However, outreach providers working in industry or academia with a research background may be considered. Although this is a voluntary role, some Royal Society funds can be allocated to travel expenses if the application is successful.
This represents a great opportunity for QEHS students to engage with this prestigious organisation, and get out into the field doing some exciting and important research which could have a significant impact on a real-life landscape recovery project. Above all, this will be fun and engaging for all concerned.
Are you qualified to take on the STEM lead role? Please contact Andrew Hedley ahedley@qehs.net to express an interest.
