QEHS Rowing Club took 48 competitors to Durham Regatta last weekend. Durham Regatta dates to 1834. It is the second oldest regatta in England after Chester Regatta. It predates the Henley Royal Regatta by 5 years. The event has a real festival feel, with live music and food stalls along the course.
As a Regatta, the racing is head-to-head, meaning that if you get beaten, you do not progress to the next round. Therefore, who you draw in the early rounds is a big decider if you are to progress in the event.
Coaches Pam and Tom, reported that all QEHS crews performed brilliantly on the day. Many crews put in strong performances against crews from across the region and beyond. We had a number of winning crews on the day.
The J15 boys, Josh, Dennis, and Cox Edward continued their winning streak, taking the J15 4x+ boys in style. Not to be outdone, a second J15 quad, containing Mack, Alex, George, James, and Cox Elodie, won the Beginner 4+.
Not to be outdone, the girls’ J15 quad, Imogen, Astrid, Olivia, Cora, and Cox Edward, also won the Women’s J15 4x+. Finally, we had a great win for the Intermediate 4+ with Ned, Adam, Finn, Felix, & Cox Merry.
All our winners attended the evening prize giving. Here, they received their winners’ tankards—a great memory of the event!
Well done to everyone who competed. Thank you to Pam, Tom, and Ned, plus volunteers, for making this event happen. It is superb to see QEHS rowers representing the school and their club with distinction.
