Following the very sad news of the untimely passing of our dear colleague Alan Currie, we have been informed by Canon Dr Dagmar Winter that Alan’s funeral will take place at Hexham Abbey at midday on Friday 13 October 2017.

As you will appreciate, a large number of our teaching and support staff wish to attend. Given this, it would be impractical and unsafe for the school to remain open for the period of time they will be out of school, which will be from 11am until approximately 2pm. It would also be unwise to open the school until 11am only, not least because there would no school transport at that time, on which many of our students rely.

Having considered the situation carefully, we have made the decision to close the school for one day, for the reasons outlined above and as a mark of respect for Alan. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause, but hope that parents/carers understand the exceptional circumstances involved.

Arrangements for the first mock examination period for Year 11 students

Year 11 students will be sitting mock GCSE exams in English Language, English Literature, maths, biology, chemistry, physics, geography, history, computing, French, German, Spanish, Latin, food technology, resistant materials, engineering and electronics from Monday 6 November to Friday 10 November 2017. All other subjects, apart from art (fine art, graphics and textiles), will sit an assessment in lessons from Monday 16 October to Thursday 19 October 2017.

On Friday 29 September 2017, QEHS took part in Macmillan Cancer Support's 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning'. A group of Year 12 students volunteered to run two cake stalls at break time, one in the lower school and one in the Winter Gardens, and raised a fantastic total of £228.97!

It is with deep sadness that we inform you that Alan Currie, much-loved English teacher at QEHS, has died.

Alan joined the school in 1982 and has taught countless numbers of Hexham young people over the past thirty-five years. His inspiring teaching, extra-curricular work and role in the wider community, all underpinned by his fundamental niceness, kindness and decency, made him a well-known and highly regarded figure.

Students have been told what has happened and how they can access emotional support in school. A book of condolences has been opened at Hexham Abbey, which can be accessed during the normal opening hours of the Abbey. We will let you know about funeral arrangements for Alan once these become clear.

At a time like this, it is important that we support each other as a community and remember all our fond memories of Alan. The school’s thoughts are also with his family at this time.
