Hadrian Learning Trust, the body responsible for the governance of Hexham Middle School and Queen Elizabeth High School, is currently looking to recruit additional trustees.

The role of Trustee in a Multi-Academy Trust is akin to that of a non-executive director of a company or charitable trust. The core functions are:

  • Defining the ethos, objectives and strategic direction;
  • Holding the Executive Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the schools;
  • Ensuring the sound, proper and effective use of the schools’ financial resources.

The operational, day-to-day running of the schools is carried out by the Executive Headteacher with the Senior Leadership Teams.

What Skills Are We Looking For?

We aim to have a balanced mix of the skills, experience and knowledge needed to carry out our role, informed by a Skills Audit. We welcome expressions of interest from all who are interested in becoming a Trustee but would be particularly keen to hear from individuals who have:

  • Either strong financial skills, perhaps with a background in accountancy or financial direction;
  • Or senior-level experience in an HR role.

How Much Commitment Is Required?

Being a Trustee is an increasingly demanding role. The Trust Board meets monthly during term time, with paperwork and data to absorb in advance. There are also a number of Committees who carry out detailed work. It would be helpful if you had at least some daytime availability.

Although these are challenging times for all schools, the work is rewarding, as we work together to help our young people become all that they can be.

How To Apply

All applications must be made through the Academy Ambassadors website. Academy Ambassadors are a not-for-profit organisation funded by the Department for Education. The website has a wealth of information on the role of Trustee.

You will be asked to submit a CV, along with a short expression of interest. Applicants may be invited for an informal interview with the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Trust Board, along with the Executive Headteacher.

If you would like to have an initial telephone conversation with the Chair, Simon Kitchman, before deciding whether to apply, please contact Charlotte Gaines, Clerk to the Trust Board, on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
